What won't work: ROCm on native Windows (WSL2 only), RX 5000 series or older (no ROCm support), and any guide that doesn't specify a ROCm version number.

The "unofficial" RX 7000 cards work fine. ROCm knows this. The docs don't tell you because AMD only validates the 7900 XTX for WSL2. The HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION trick bridges that gap.
Why ROCm on WSL2 Breaks — And Why Version Pinning Fixes It
ROCm's WSL2 support lags native Linux by 1-2 versions. When you run apt install rocm-dev without specifying a version, you get whatever's current — and that version almost certainly hasn't been validated for WSL2 yet. The install completes. rocm-smi returns nothing. Ollama falls back to CPU. You get cryptic HSA errors with no actionable fix in the official docs.
The pain is specific: you followed instructions, the system reported success, and your GPU is invisible anyway. Most guides online were written for ROCm 5.x and haven't been updated. They skip version pinning entirely because it wasn't the breaking issue when they wrote them.
The promise here is exact commands tested on RX 7900 XTX and RX 7800 XT on WSL2 Ubuntu 22.04 in April 2026. ROCm 6.1.3 is the last version AMD validated for WSL2. Pin to it, and the setup works. Chase newer versions, and you're debugging kernel modules at 2 AM.
Step-by-Step: The Working ROCm 6.1.3 Install
Step 1: Verify Windows Prerequisites
Open PowerShell as administrator and confirm WSL2 status:
wsl --status
You should see "Default Version: 2". If not, run wsl --set-default-version 2.
Check your AMD driver version in Windows Settings → System → Display → Advanced display → Display adapter properties. You need 23.40.27.06 or newer. If you're behind, update through AMD Adrenalin before proceeding — older drivers cause silent failures that look like Linux-side problems.
Step 2: Prepare Ubuntu 22.04 in WSL2
Launch your Ubuntu 22.04 instance and update the base system:
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
Install required dependencies:
sudo apt install -y wget gnupg2 software-properties-common
Step 3: Add the ROCm Repository (Version-Pinned)
Here's where most guides go wrong. They add the repository and install rocm-dev without specifying a version. Don't do that.
Add the AMD GPU repository with the 6.1.3 pin:

Notice the 6.1.3 in the URL. That's the pin. This repository only contains 6.1.3 and its dependencies, so apt cannot accidentally upgrade you to a broken version.
Update package lists:

Step 4: Install ROCm 6.1.3
Install the development package with explicit version:
sudo apt install -y rocm-dev6.1.3
This installs ROCm 6.1.3 and locks it. Future apt upgrade commands will not bump you to 6.2.x or beyond.
Add your user to the render and video groups:
sudo usermod -a -G render,video $USER
Apply the group change without logging out:
newgrp render
newgrp video
Step 5: Configure Environment Variables
This is the second place guides fail: they skip HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION for RX 7000 cards, or they set it incorrectly.
Add to your ~/.bashrc:

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/rocm-6.1.3/lib
For RX 7000 series cards, add the override:

The 11.0.0 value targets the RDNA3 architecture. RX 7900 XTX, 7900 XT, 7800 XT, 7700 XT, and 7600 all use this. RX 6000 series cards use RDNA2 and don't need this variable — setting it won't hurt, but it's unnecessary.
Reload your shell:
source ~/.bashrc
Step 6: Verify ROCm Detection
Test that ROCm sees your GPU:
rocm-smi
You should see your card listed with temperature, power draw, and VRAM usage. If this returns "No AMD GPUs found," something went wrong in the Windows driver or WSL2 passthrough layer — not in the ROCm install. Re-check your AMD driver version and WSL2 status.
Test HIP functionality:
rocminfo | grep "Name:"
You should see your GPU's architecture name (gfx1100 for RX 7000, gfx1030 for RX 6000).
Installing and Configuring Ollama
With ROCm working, Ollama installation is straightforward. The official Ollama install script detects ROCm automatically — but only if ROCm is properly configured before you run it.
Step 7: Install Ollama
curl -fsSL https://ollama.com/install.sh | sh
The installer will detect /opt/rocm-6.1.3 and build with ROCm support. This takes 2-3 minutes.
Step 8: Verify GPU Inference
Start Ollama:
ollama serve
In another terminal, pull and run a test model:
ollama run llama3.1:8b
While it's loading, check rocm-smi in a third terminal. You should see GPU memory allocation climbing — proof that inference is running on your AMD card, not falling back to CPU.
If rocm-smi shows no activity and Ollama is slow, check the Ollama logs:
journalctl -u ollama --no-pager -n 50
Look for "AMD GPU detected" or ROCm-related errors. The most common failure is Ollama building without ROCm support because it couldn't find the ROCm installation — this happens if you installed Ollama before setting the PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH variables.
What the HSA_OVERRIDE_GFX_VERSION Actually Does
AMD's ROCm uses a "GFX version" to identify GPU architectures. Official support requires AMD to validate and document each version. Unofficially, similar architectures often work with a simple override.
Cards
RX 7900 XTX, 7900 XT, 7800 XT, 7700 XT, 7600
RX 6950 XT, 6900 XT, 6800 XT, 6800, 6700 XT, 6600 XT ROCm 6.1.3 officially supports gfx1100 for the 7900 XTX only. The override tells the ROCm runtime to treat your 7800 XT (or other RDNA3 card) as a 7900 XTX for compatibility purposes. It works because the architectures are identical at the compute level AMD uses for AI workloads.
This isn't a hack in the sense of being unstable. It's an undocumented configuration that AMD engineers use internally and that the community has validated extensively. The risk is minimal: if you set the wrong GFX version, ROCm simply won't detect your GPU. It won't damage hardware or corrupt data.
Maintaining Your Setup: Updates and Gotchas
Kernel Updates
Windows updates sometimes ship new WSL2 kernels. These can break GPU passthrough in ways that look like ROCm failures. If your working setup suddenly shows "No AMD GPUs found" after a Windows update:

ROCm Version Lock
Your pinned 6.1.3 install won't auto-upgrade, which is the point. Don't manually add newer ROCm repositories unless you've verified WSL2 support in AMD's release notes. As of April 2026, 6.1.3 remains the validated version for WSL2.
Ollama Updates
Ollama's self-update mechanism preserves ROCm support if the ROCm environment variables are still set. After an Ollama update, always verify with rocm-smi that GPU inference still works. If Ollama falls back to CPU, re-run the install script — it will rebuild with ROCm support.
